Dynamic Character (q5-1)

Q: Anne is a dynamic character; that is, she changes in the course of the play. What does Anne’s gift giving reveal about her? How do her gifts to her mother and peter show that she has changed?

The gifts that Anne had given to her mother and Peter show that she has learned how to think for others and respect their words. The pass of 10 listening hours proves that Anne has learned to reflect on her misdeeds and she is learning to think more about others than herself. The presents also show Anne's will to get closer with her mother and Peter and respect them. So, Anne has grown from immature and full of hate (towards Mother and Peter) to agreeable and caring. This also shows the maturity of Anne after staying in the Annex (a scrunched up place full of other people and strangers) for a long time.

Reflecting(q7)

Q: What do you think this play reveals about our need for freedom? About the power of love? About courage and hope? About good and evil? In your answers, consider how the play’s themes relate to the themes of another work, such as The Taming of the Shrew.

This play reveals that all living things have the right to live freely with their own aspect in life. In Amazing Grace, their are many scenes where people are showing refusement towards the slavery act because they think that all humans should be treated equal with their freedom. The family of Anne Frank must have survived during their time in hiding with their love for each other. The love of family is the most important and everlasting love to take place in life. This message is displayed in many other works. Their is a Korean saying, "Blood is thicker that water", that messages the importance of family love. There are many scenes in the play where the people clench onto their hope and take risks (courage) to save themselves (like when Mr. Frank went down the Annex to investigate if anyone was there). This reminded me of The Shawshank Redemption. The main character plucked up his courage to escape the prison and also had his hope of surviving and doing revenge. I don't really get the good and evil but, I think that there was no good and evil in the war. It was probably the lake of understanding and the force of prejudice. The Jews aren't actually all "good" and there must have been many crimes before the war that the Jews caused. (I cannot recall any other work about good and evil that relates to this)

LOGGING ON AND OFF (q3)

Task: The theme of a work is not its subject or topic, but rather what that subject means – what idea or insight it reveals about human existence – what is the author’s message to the planet? Themes are revealed gradually as we learn about the characters and their predicament. Keep a LIVING post (one which you keep adding to every time you log on to your blog) about what you think the play’s theme(s) is/are.

1. All people are equal and have a right to live with their own ways of life without any disrespectful obstacles.

Books, Movies,,,(q6)

Q: Why are there so many books, movies, documentaries, etc. about the Holocaust? Why do we keep retelling this story?
The Holocaust was a devastating war in the world's history. This war showed the ignorance and brutilaty of humans. Many people were killed for pointless reasons (like their race, religion. etc) .
The Holocaust also dealed with many raids and historical events in WW2. WW2 was a war that took place all around the world. The diaries and letters of many of the victims must have displayed the cruelty of the war, so the records of today are wide and open. During the Holocaust, non-Jews were also killed for helping the Jews. The Nazis killing their own people must have been absurd and many people should remember that. Survivors from the war are also still alive and interviews prove alot of new facts and the information of this topic is growing steadily.

The Nightmare(q5-5)

Q: How do the events following Anne’s nightmare reveal tensions between Anne and two other members of the household?

After Anne screamed of fright from her nightmare, Mr. Dussel woke up with fury and accused her of being too loud. He complained that Anne was going to get them caught someday and she had to be controlled. This reveals Anne and Mr. Dussel's relationship as negative. Mrs. Frank darts into Anne's room after hearing her daughter scream. She cuddles Anne with motherly love and concern and asks Anne if she could sit next to her bed and watch her till she falls into sleep. As soon as Anne refuses, Mrs. Frank get accused. Mrs. Frank also tries to give Anne a kiss before leaving Anne's room, but Anne also refuses. Mrs. Frank weeps outside of Anne's room after. This shows Anne and her mother's relationship unsteadiness.

Hardest part in the Annex(q5-4)

Q: What do you think would be the hardest part of life in the Secret Annex: the fear of discovery, the need to keep silent for hours at a time, the sharing of cramped quarters with strangers, or some other aspect? Explain.

I think that the need to keep silent for many hours should have been the hardest part of living in the Annex. Without a chance to move around, use the bathroom, cook, or even speak, the hors must have felt awfully long tedious. Usually, time goes so slow while we are waiting for something without doing anything. Imagine feeling that everyday....The long hours of silence must have created a horribly boring and painful time. If someone accidently causes a noise, this might also lead to the fear of discovery and must have made conflicts with other housemates. Silence can also cause a mental disorder if not careful. Many of the people should have felt isolation and become depressed.
Anne, especially, must have had a terrible time during those silent hours.

The Attitude of the 2 Teenagers Towards Their Family(q5-3)

Anne and Peter were in their blooming stages during their hiding. Anne, as a bright and lively girl shows direct delivery of her feelings to her family. Her favorite family member is her father who tends to care and understand her so, she depends on her father the most and acts positively towards him with respect. (positive, respectful) Anne was jealous of her sister, Margot, who always got good grades and was complimented for her feminine actions. Because Anne was compared with Margot all the time, she grew jealous and tired of her sisters ladyness. (negative, tired) In her diary, Anne complains that her mother never understands her and only repects Margot. Anne curses alot about her mother and whines that she never wants to become like her mother, who is also like Margot. (negative, disrespectful)

On the other hand, Peter acts negatively towards all his parents. Mr. Van Daan pesters Peter because of his stupidity, etc. His father also complains alot that Peter cares about Mouschi too much and claims that the cat was keeping Peter from his studies and life. Peter must have felt abashed and humiliated when Mr. Van Daan said that, because his father was going against his own thoughts and joys. (negative, stubborn) Mrs. Van Daan has a chaacteristic that's similar to Anne, she is lively and outright. She mocks Peter by embarrassing him with jokes of his relationship with Anne. In many parts of the scene, I could tell that Peter felt embarrassed when his mother spoke of specific topics. (pg.383: "Mother... for heaven's sake...will you please stop saying that?") So, I could tell that Peter is humiliated by his mother and also doesn't agree/like because of their opposite characters. (negative, humiliated)

Forshadowing.(q4)

Q: Why does Mr. Frank break down when he sees the glove ?

In the beginning of the play, there is a scene where Mr. Frank enters the Annex after the war and discover the belongings of his family and breaks ou t with sorrow. In the scene, Mr. Frank finds a glove on the floor and bursts out crying. I think that it was a definite thing for him to do. Looking at the glove must have brought many memories of the 2 years in hiding. (pg. 371: "It has too many memories for me. Everywhere, there's something....") The glove must have been a belonging of a family member that meant much to him. The thought of the family member in the death camps, in distant memories, etc... And the fact that Mr. Frank wasn't able to meet the person again must have been sorrowful. The glove might of reminded that he was alone and had to love without his family. So, the glove shows the remembrance, pain, and love of Mr. Frank towards it's owner.

Walls, Bolts and Locks(q5-2)

"But always remember this, Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind." Explain what you think this statement means. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

This statement probably means that the true thoughts and opinions of your mind can never change and nobody can change it. Although, Anne and her family are in hiding from the Nazi's and are discriminated because of their religion and culture, the outer people cannot invade their thoughts of their own culture. So, the entrance of their minds are blocked from other people and is kept to themselves.

Prejudice

-What is prejudice?
Prejudice is the feeling of dislike towards someonewithout any reason. The feeling of hate towards someone even though you don't know how that person's like.
-Prejudice in the world?
There are some people who try to keep a distance with other people of different races. Even though they don't know the personality of that person, they just judge the color of the person's skin, their religion, etc.
-Effects of prejudice?
All people also tend to dislike the people who disliked them first. On top of that, prejudice is when a person hates a person for a lame reason (judging by the 'cover'). The person that is being hated gets humiliated when they feel negative feelings towards them (the reason they don't know) then, it's obvious that the person would hate the person hating them. Altogether, the relation of the people will tilt to a bad side. Soooo,,,this can cause social problems with a couple of people or even many countries.

What do I know already about the Holocaust?

Right now, I know that the Holocaust took place in the 20th century and there was a harsh discrimination with Jews. Hitler was the lead of the Naxi and was responsible for WW2 and the Holocaust. Many Jews were killed in this tragic event even thought they hadn't done anything wrong or illegal. Anne Frank was one of the Jewish victims. There were many concentration camps where the captures Jews had to labor all day and they would eventually die of hunger, exhaustion, etc.

Characterization of Red Scarf Girl

The author used many children and neighbors from her past in her story. The particular thing about this is that she changed their names so they won't be dangered because of her book's event descriptions. Because the author was young at that age and she went to school, she put many of some same aged kids in her story and included many conversations with them. The main character also stayed at her house for a amount of time and was in 'hiding' with them for a long time, so, there were many of her family members, too. This also strengthened the strength that her family helped Ji-Li and also symbolized the danger of the 'outer world'. At the end of this book, the author states all the things that happen to the characters and that also gave me a thought that I had read a story that talked about people who actually exist and that gave a lot of reality into this book.

Secret

This happened when I was still in kindergarten. My friend, Emily and I used to hide under the teacher's rocking chair and play. One day, we couldn't find the rocking chair (probably because the teacher found out that we were sneeking underneath her chair) so, we decided to hide inside the game chest. We took out all of the board games in the chest and sat inside it. We locked ourselves inside and told each other scary stories. While we were chattering, I felt around the dark chest and found a wrapped lollypop. Full of joy, I happily ate the stale candy and kept on chattering. At the end of the day, I was laying in the nap-time bed with a stomach-ache. My teacher asked me why I was sick and also asked if I ate something that was dirty. I lied and said that I didn't and was sent home. The white lie is still a secret of mine.

Courage

When I was still in the States, my friends and I went to a City Halloween Fair that had many amusement rides and entertainment shows. We were only in 5th grade, so not many of us had the courage to enter the 'Spooky House' that was hidden in the corner of the park. The Spooky House was known for it's blood-chilling surprises inside it. A rumor that a real ghost with long, black hair was lurking around the house to attack anybody who opens the door. Of course, this was a fake ghost made out of pillowsheets. But the thought of the ghost jumping on us was frightening and also exciting. Although my friends didn't dare to enter, I grit my teeth and opened the door. But......to tell you the truth.....I just ran across the house all the way to the exit with my eyes closed and don't remember any ghost that jumped or startled me.......I only remember the cold knob of the opening door and the hard wood of the exiting door.
